AI Provider

This settings page is only available to domain administrators.

SmarterMail can connect to OpenAI's ChatGPT so users can get help writing and editing their email: drafting a message, proofreading it, translating it or changing its tone, as well as adding descriptions to appointments and tasks. The AI Provider page is where you turn ChatGPT on for your domain, enter the OpenAI API key the domain uses, choose the AI model and limit how many requests each user can make per day. To open it, click Domain Settings, then AI Provider.

Once ChatGPT is enabled, the AI Assistance options appear for users throughout webmail, and users also see an AI Provider page in their own Settings. For how users work with these tools, see AI Assistance.

Note: ChatGPT is one of the features a system administrator turns on for a domain on the Features card. You can only change the settings on this page if the system administrator has also enabled Allow domain administrators to manage integrations for your domain. Otherwise, the page is read-only and shows the message "One or more settings are controlled by your system administrator."

ChatGPT Settings

  • Enable - Turns ChatGPT on or off for the domain.
  • OpenAI API Key - The API key SmarterMail uses to send requests to OpenAI on behalf of your users. This field is required when ChatGPT is enabled and no key has been saved. If you don't have a key yet, see Getting an OpenAI API Key, below.
  • AI Model - The OpenAI model used for requests. The list is filled in from your OpenAI account once a valid API key has been entered, so it only shows models that key has access to.
  • Fetch Models - Reloads the list of AI models from OpenAI using the API key you entered. Use this after entering or changing a key, or if OpenAI has added models to your account.
  • Max Requests Per Day (0 = Unlimited) - The number of AI requests each user can make per day. The count resets every day at midnight UTC. Enter 0 to allow unlimited requests.
  • Allow users to use their own API key - When enabled, users can enter their own OpenAI API key, AI model and daily request limit on their AI Provider page, and their requests are then billed to their own OpenAI account instead of the domain's. Users who don't enter their own key keep using the domain's key and limits. This option is only available once ChatGPT is enabled and a working API key has been entered.

When you click Save, SmarterMail first tests the API key with OpenAI. If the test fails, a warning explains why and the settings aren't saved, so you can correct the key and try again.

Getting an OpenAI API Key

API keys are created in your OpenAI account. OpenAI charges for API usage separately from a ChatGPT subscription, so you'll need a billing method on the account before the key will work.

  1. Sign in to the OpenAI platform, or create an account if you don't have one.
  2. Open the billing settings and add a payment method.
  3. Open the API keys page and click Create new secret key. Giving the key a name, such as the name of your domain, makes it easier to identify later.
  4. Copy the key right away. OpenAI only shows the full key once.
  5. Paste the key into the OpenAI API Key field on the AI Provider page, choose an AI model and click Save.

Treat the key like a password. If you think it has been exposed, revoke it on the OpenAI API keys page, create a new one and update it here.
