AI Provider

When your domain administrator has turned on ChatGPT, SmarterMail's AI Assistance tools can help you draft, proofread, translate and change the tone of your messages, and add descriptions to appointments and tasks. By default, these requests use your organization's OpenAI account. If your administrator allows it, the AI Provider page lets you use your own OpenAI API key instead, along with your own AI model and daily request limit. To open it, click Settings, then AI Provider.

For how to use AI Assistance, see AI Assistance.

Note: The AI Provider page only appears when ChatGPT is enabled for your domain. If your administrator hasn't allowed users to use their own API keys, the page shows the message "One or more settings are controlled by your domain administrator," and the settings can't be changed.

ChatGPT Settings

  • Override API Key - Turn this on to use your own OpenAI API key instead of your organization's. The other settings can only be changed while this is on. Turn it off to go back to your organization's key and limits.
  • OpenAI API Key - Your OpenAI API key. You create keys on the API keys page of your OpenAI account, which needs a billing method before the key will work. OpenAI only shows a new key once, so copy it right away.
  • AI Model - The OpenAI model used for your requests. The list is filled in from your OpenAI account once a valid API key has been entered.
  • Fetch Models - Reloads the list of AI models from OpenAI using the API key you entered.
  • Max Requests Per Day (0 = Unlimited) - The number of AI requests you can make per day with your own key. The count resets every day at midnight UTC. Enter 0 for no limit.

When you click Save, SmarterMail first tests your API key with OpenAI. If the test fails, a warning explains why and the settings aren't saved.
