Chat Providers

This settings page is only available to domain administrators.

Chat providers give your users instant messaging alongside their email. SmarterMail has its own built-in chat, SmarterMail Chat, and it can also connect to an existing Rocket.Chat server. The Chat Providers page lists each provider with a description and an Enable switch, so you can choose which ones your users can use. To open it, click Domain Settings, then Chat Providers.

When at least one chat provider is enabled, users see a Chat Providers page in their own Settings.

Note: SmarterMail Chat and Rocket.Chat are features a system administrator turns on for a domain on the Features card. You can only turn them on or off here if the system administrator has also enabled Allow domain administrators to manage integrations for your domain. Otherwise, the page is read-only and shows the message "One or more settings are controlled by your system administrator."

SmarterMail Chat

This feature is only available in SmarterMail Enterprise.

SmarterMail Chat is SmarterMail's built-in chat, with text, voice and video chat between users on your domain. It works in webmail and with third-party XMPP chat clients, and conversations are archived so they can be searched later. When SmarterMail Chat is enabled, you can also use Chat Search to search your users' chat history, as long as the system administrator has enabled Domain Chat History View for the domain. For how users work with chat, see SmarterMail Chat.

  • Enable - Turns SmarterMail Chat on or off for the domain.

Rocket.Chat

Rocket.Chat is an open-source team chat platform that your organization hosts on its own server. When Rocket.Chat is enabled, each user connects their own Rocket.Chat account from their Chat Providers page, using the server address, their Rocket.Chat user ID and a personal access token they create in Rocket.Chat. New chat messages then appear as notifications in the lower right corner of webmail, and clicking one opens Rocket.Chat in a new browser tab.

  • Enable - Turns Rocket.Chat on or off for the domain.
Note: Disabling Rocket.Chat disconnects every user on the domain from Rocket.Chat. If you turn it back on later, users need to enter their Rocket.Chat details again.

Before enabling Rocket.Chat, make sure your users have accounts on your Rocket.Chat server and know its address (for many organizations, this is something like https://rocketchat.example.com). Users create their own personal access tokens, so there are no server credentials to enter here.
