Document Providers

This settings page is only available to domain administrators.

Document providers let users create, view and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations in their browser, using an office suite your organization runs on its own server. SmarterMail works with two: OnlyOffice and Collabora Online. Once a provider is set up, users can create new files and edit existing ones in File Storage, and view supported attachments, without downloading anything. The Document Providers page is where you connect your domain to those servers. To open it, click Domain Settings, then Document Providers.

When a document provider is enabled, users see a Document Providers page in their own Settings that shows which providers are available to them.

Note: OnlyOffice and Collabora Online are features a system administrator turns on for a domain on the Features card, and the system administrator can also enter the server details there. You can only change the settings on this page if the system administrator has also enabled Allow domain administrators to manage integrations for your domain. Otherwise, the page is read-only and shows the message "One or more settings are controlled by your system administrator."

Provider Settings

OnlyOffice and Collabora Online each have their own card with the same settings:

  • Enable - Turns the provider on or off for the domain. The other fields can only be edited while the provider is enabled.
  • Server Address - The full URL of your OnlyOffice or Collabora Online server, using either a host name (for example, https://onlyoffice.example.com) or an IP address. This field is required when the provider is enabled.
  • Max Connections (0 = Unlimited) - The maximum number of editing sessions the domain can have open on the server at once. Enter 0 for no limit.
  • Max Connections for Each User (0 = Unlimited) - The maximum number of editing sessions a single user can have open at once. This works together with Max Connections, so a user can never go over either limit. Enter 0 for no limit.
Note: The number of connections an OnlyOffice or Collabora Online server accepts can vary by license, so check your license when setting Max Connections.

Server Tips

  • If the OnlyOffice or Collabora Online server is on a different domain than SmarterMail, remove the x-frame-src header on that server. Otherwise the browser won't let SmarterMail display the editor.
  • If you use OnlyOffice Community Server, add /ds-vpath to the end of the Server Address. Other editions of OnlyOffice may not need it.
