Licensing and Activation

When deploying your first hub, you're asked for a license key, along with the email address and password of your SmarterTools account (the license holder's account). This only needs to be done once, on the first hub. It isn't required when setting up additional hubs or configuring nodes. All SmarterMail HA installations are licensed for unlimited mailboxes, and every node runs as SmarterMail Enterprise. SmarterMail HA licenses also include the MAPI & EWS add-on, so it shows as active rather than offering a trial.

Licensing is managed only from the hub. On each node, the SmarterMail Licensing page is read-only and displays a banner explaining that licensing is configured on the High Availability hub.

Note: Activation of a license key requires the hub to contact SmarterTools over port 443 (HTTPS). Please ensure that any firewall or internet security software you have installed allows an outgoing TCP port 443 request. If the hub cannot connect for security reasons or due to internet connectivity, please contact sales@smartertools.com to inquire about next steps.

The Licensing View

The top of the Licensing page shows three summary cards for the SmarterMail HA license. Below them, a table lists each add-on and its current status.

Summary Cards

Server license - The product (SmarterMail High Availability), its status and the license key. The status reads Active License, Active Trial or Not Activated. Use the copy button next to the key to copy it to the clipboard.
Lease - SmarterMail HA licenses are paid monthly and renew as a lease, so there is no Maintenance and Support date. Instead, this card shows the date the current lease is valid until and how many days remain. The remaining days are highlighted once 30 or fewer are left. For a trial license, this card is labeled Active Trial and shows the date the trial expires.
Mailboxes - Always Unlimited for an activated SmarterMail HA license.

Add-ons Table

The add-ons table has one row each for ActiveSync, Cyren Premium Antispam, Cyren Premium Antivirus, MAPI & EWS, Message Sniffer and SpamFoo. Columns can be sorted by clicking their headers. Each row shows:

Add-on - The name and icon of the add-on.
Status - Active, Active Trial, Active Beta or Not Activated.
Mailboxes - For ActiveSync, the number of ActiveSync mailboxes. Other add-ons show Unlimited.
Expiration - The date the add-on's trial, subscription or beta period ends, or Does not expire. The date is marked with the number of days left once it's within 30 days, and marked Expired once it has passed.

On narrow screens, the Mailboxes and Expiration columns are hidden. That information is still available in the add-on's details window. Click any row to open the details window, which describes what the add-on does and repeats its status, mailbox count and expiration date, along with its Plan and Subscription status when they apply.

Available Actions

The following actions are available at the top of the page:

Activate - Select this option to activate a new SmarterMail HA license key. Enter the license key and continue. If the key requires authentication, you're then asked for the email address and password of the SmarterTools account associated with the license. Trial license keys are activated without that step.
Reactivate - Causes SmarterMail HA to call back to the SmarterTools servers to refresh the license key, and should be used after purchasing an add-on or changing the license. Reactivating is immediate and does not require your SmarterTools account credentials. This option only appears once a license key has been activated.
Manage License - Opens your SmarterTools account in a new browser tab, where you can manage your SmarterMail HA license, add HA licenses, purchase add-ons and more.
