Diagnostics
The diagnostics page provides a number of key pieces of information about SmarterMail that are important for system administrators. It's also important for SmarterTools support as information on this page can be helpful when troubleshooting issues. The page is broken out into various cards, as described below.
Product Information
This card has information about the version of SmarterMail that is currently installed, including:
- Version - Whether it's SmarterMail Enterprise or Professional.
- Build - The exact Build installed and the date that Build was released.
- Product Activation - This tells whether the product is properly activated or not. A "failed" status means that not all features and limits may be available as SmarterTools does not recognize the installation.
System Settings
This card details information about the system SmarterMail is running on, including:
- SDK Version - The version of the .NET Framework running.
- OS Locale - The locale of the operating system.
- OS Date Format - The date format of the operating system, which is generally based on its locale. (I.e., mmddyy or ddmmyy, etc.)
- OS Time Format - The time format of the operating system, which is again generally based on its locale. (E.g., 24 hour format.)
- OS Default Encoding - The default encoding enforced by the operating system, which is again generally based on its locale. (E.g., UFT-8 or ISO 8859-1.)
- OS Time Zone - The time zone set for the operating system.
- OS Version - The operating system that SmarterMail is running on. (E.g., Windows 2022, Ubuntu 24.04 .4 LTS, etc.)
Folder Permissions
SmarterMail requires certain permissions to be applied to folders so it will run properly.
- Permissions Check - Whether the folders SmarterMail uses have the proper permissions or not. Improper permissions on one or more folders can cause issues.
Internet Connectivity
SmarterMail generally requires access to the internet in order to run properly. There are some instances where it's used in "air-gapped" networks, or behind network firewalls. In these cases, several checks will fail even though SmarterMail will perform just fine. Regardless, SmarterMail will test if it's able to access several different locations, and then display whether these tests pass or fail.
Top Log Files by Size
Keeping tabs on log files is important for a system administrator. The larger the log file, the longer some reports can take to process. In addition, logs can grow in size depending on the log level set. Large logs, obviously, take up space on a mail server, so being able to see how large some logs get can help an administrator reduce the amount of space needed, or, conversely, add disks (or disk space) to increase space available. On this page, logs are listed by overall size in descending order.
Loaded JSON Files Over 15MB
Similar to log files, larger JSON files can impede performance of the SmarterMail system. This card displays any JSON files that are over 15MB in size so you can review and, possibly, reduce them in size as needed.
