Subscribers and Digest Subscribers

This settings page is only available to domain administrators, mailing list moderators and system administrators with the proper permissions.

Individuals that sign up to receive messages from a mailing list are called subscribers. Subscribers are categorized in two ways: the Subscribers tab stores the subscribers for standard mailing list postings (one email per post) and the Digest Subscribers tab stores subscribers for condensed digest emails. Both tabs work identically, so everything below applies to each. For each subscriber you can see their Email Address, the date they Subscribed, and a count of Bounces. When double opt-in is enabled for the list, a Verified column also shows whether each subscriber has confirmed their subscription.

Manually Adding Subscribers

There are two primary methods for manually adding subscribers — either regular list subscribers or digest subscribers — to a mailing list:

  1. If there are only a few addresses to add to the mailing list, list moderators, domain administrators or system administrators with the proper domain management permissions can manually add subscribers.

  2. If there are a large number of addresses to add to a mailing list, a .CSV file containing all of the subscriber emails can be uploaded instead.

Adding individual subscribers to a mailing list:

  1. Select the desired mailing list. The mailing list settings will load in the content pane.
  2. On the Subscribers (or Digest Subscribers) tab, the list of subscribers to this mailing list will load in the content pane.
  3. Using the New button, add the subscriber(s) email address(es), one per line.
  4. Once all addresses have been added, be sure to Save your changes.

Adding multiple subscribers to a mailing list at once:

It's also possible to add multiple subscribers to a list at one time by uploading a .CSV file. At a bare minimum, the .csv file must contain a column named "EmailAddress". Any additional columns in the .csv file will be added as Custom Fields for the corresponding subscriber/email address. For example, a CSV with EmailAddress and FirstName columns both subscribes each address AND fills in each subscriber's FirstName custom field, ready for use in personalized list messages.

The Import CSV File option can be used to:

  • Add new Subscribers, with or without Custom Field data.
  • Update/overwrite the Custom Field values for existing Subscribers.
  • Add new Custom Fields to existing Subscribers.
  • Note: If you import a CSV that contains existing Subscribers, their Custom Field data will be overwritten with the contents of the CSV.
  1. Select the desired mailing list and go to the Subscribers tab.
  2. Using the Actions (⋮) button, select Import CSV File. The Upload Subscribers modal window opens.
  3. You can either drag-and-drop a CSV file into the modal window, or click inside the window to open File Explorer to find and "open" the file. Then click Upload. If any rows can't be imported — malformed addresses, for example — a notice lets you know that some subscribers could not be imported.

Managing Subscribers

Once a subscriber has been added to the list, clicking on them opens their details, organized into tabs:

  • Details - The subscriber's email address and bounce count, along with an editable value for each of the list's Custom Fields.
  • Subscriptions - Every mailing list on the domain, with a toggle showing (and controlling) which lists this address is subscribed to.
  • Digests - The same as Subscriptions, but for digest subscriptions.
  • Bounces - A history of bounce messages for this subscriber, including which list and message bounced and when. A Reset Bounces button clears the count — useful when a subscriber's mailbox was temporarily full or broken and they've asked to keep receiving the list.
  • Message Log - A history of the list messages sent to this subscriber. This is handy when a subscriber claims they never received a posting: the log shows whether it was sent to them.

A few other conveniences live in the Actions (⋮) menu on the Subscribers tab: Export CSV File downloads the full subscriber list (including custom fields) as a CSV file, Resend Double Opt-in Verification re-sends the confirmation email to selected unverified subscribers, and Delete All clears the entire subscriber list in one step.
